Over the last couple of years, there has been a lot of talk about NIL and the Transfer Portal in college football. Which means there needs to be some new rules and regulations to go along with it. Here is just a look at what some of the said rules could look like.

NIL

NIL stands for name, image, and likeness, and this means that NIL money comes from the profits that are coming from things like jerseys, merchandise, etc. With NIL money getting higher and higher, it’s starting to dictate where students are going to play. It seems like whatever school has the most money to give out gets the best prospects. Even with all of this, the player still deserves to be paid, but there needs to be regulations.

Maybe the idea of some kind of salary cap could work out. Give schools so much money they can use each year to recruit players to play for their team. This would create an even playing field for all schools with the chance for changes to be made in the future.

The Transfer Portal

In 2018 the NCAA introduced the transfer portal. This was introduced to better the ability to track students moving from school to school. It has become more and more popular in the past few years. According to ESPN in 2019, 6.4% of football players across the country transferred. That number has grown up to 20.5% this past year in 2023. That means that one out of every five players will be at a different school in 2024.

As of right now, there are not many rules surrounding the transfer portal. Some new rules have now been suggested after there was a situation this offseason. During the 2023 season, Kadyn Proctor played offensive tackle for the Alabama Crimson Tide and is already projected to be a future first-round pick. During the offseason, Proctor entered the transfer portal mainly due to the retirement of Nick Saban. On January 20th, Proctor announced his transfer to the University of Iowa, where he is from. Now three months later, he will be heading back to Tuscaloosa to play for Alabama.

Since this happened, people have started to wonder how often this is going to happen in the future. What is preventing Proctor from doing this same thing next year? With this event getting headlines, what will the NCAA do to prevent it? Now, the transfer portal is a great thing and is very helpful for players, but it seems that there is a chance players could start abusing it. One idea is that players will only be able to transfer once every year or maybe even only twice throughout their colligate career.

No matter what, it seems like something needs to change. NIL and the transfer portal are great new things, but they also need to have checks and balances, so they are not being abused.
